Interview - Dr. Alucard (Illuminati Comics & Comics Khazana Magazine)

वैसे तो मैंने इनसे पॉडकास्ट का वायदा किया था पर हर बार कुछ ना कुछ गड़बड़ होने के कारण एक लेख के रूप में डॉ. Alucard एडिटर, illuminati कॉमिक्स, desi-american.com  (छद्म नाम) का साक्षात्कार पोस्ट कर रहा हूँ। इसके अलावा देसी अमेरिकन डॉट कॉम एवम कॉमिक्स खज़ाना पत्रिका के ज़रिये ये अपनी टीम के साथ हमारा मनोरंजन करते आये है। - मोहित शर्मा (ज़हन) #mohit_trendster

*) - पहचान के लिए ऐसे छद्म नामो के इस्तेमाल की क्या वजहें है?

सबसे पहले तो धन्यवाद मोहित मुझे आपके पॉडकास्ट पर invite करने के लिए . जी हाँ DR. ALUCARD मेरा alias है . ऐसा करना इसलिए ज़रूरी है क्योंकि मेरा भी परिवार है , मैं एक कॉमिक्स फैन के रूप में सबको एंटरटेन करना चाहता हूँ but not at cost of my own problems/life. असल में सबसे बड़ी दिक्कत रही है कॉपीराइट की . इस प्रोजेक्ट को करते वक़्त कुछ सवाल बार-बार सामने आये - कहीं ये काम गलत तो नही होगा ? पात्रों के कॉपीराइट का हनन ? कानूनी-गैर-कानूनी इत्यादि। लेकिन ये सब सवाल कॉमिक्स को बचाने और उस की लोकप्रियता बढ़ाने का है। यही जुनून है जिसने हमें कई बातें सिखाई। मैं सभी पब्लिशर और रचनाकारों से कहना चाहूँगा की हम सभी आप से बेहद प्रेम करते हैं और आपके शुक्रगुज़ार हैं की आपके अथक परिश्रम के कारण हमारा बचपन इतना सुंदर और यादगार बना। हमारा ध्येय किसी भी प्रकार से कॉपीराइट का हनन करना या पब्लिशर को नुकसान पहुँचाना नहीं है। ना ही हम किसी प्रकार से भारतीय हीरोज़ को पश्चिमी  हीरोज़ से कमतर आंकने की कोशिश कर रहें हैं। हम सिर्फ भारत में कॉमिक्स के प्रति पाठकों की रूचि बढ़ाना चाहते हैं । अगर किसी भी पब्लिशर और रचियता को इससे समस्या हो तो हमें ईमेल करें ताकि हम मिल कर इस का समाधान कर सकें। एक और महत्वपूर्ण बात - हमने इस कॉमिक श्रृंखला की सिर्फ डिजिटल कॉपी ही बनायीं है और इसे पाठकों को बिना किसी मूल्य के बाँट रहे हैं।  जब मैंने ये प्रोजेकट शुरू किया तब मैंने बहुत लोगों से हेल्प मांगी लेकिन सिर्फ कुछ चुनिन्दा लोगों ने ही मदद की. ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि सबको डर था की क्या ये कॉपीराइट नियम का उलंघन होगा ? हाँ कुछ हद तक उनका डर सही भी है . लेकिन मैं सभी पाठकों को कहना चाहता हूँ की ये सिर्फ फैन-आर्ट है. हम इसे non-commercial, non-monetary, non-profit रूप में बना रहे हैं और हमारा इसका कोई hardcopy बनाने का कोई विचार नहीं है . हम fans से इसके के लिए कोई पैसा नहीं ले रहे हैं . अब आप ही बताये कॉपीराइट उल्लंघन क्या है ? क्या सुपर हीरोज़ के drawing बनाना, उन पर कलर करना , उनके images को फेसबुक पर लगाना ये अलग है ? नहीं यह भी उल्लंघन है . मेरे पहले फ्रैंक knot, नवनीत जी , इंदरजीत भानुजी etc भी यह कर चुके है . हमारा उद्देश्य सिर्फ मनोरंजन है और कुछ नहीं . असल में राज कॉमिक्स, डायमंड कॉमिक्स, DC, मार्वल बहुत बड़ी कंपनियां है और मुझे नहीं लगता के उन्हें इस प्रकार के फैन-आर्ट से कोई समस्या होगी. उनके लिए तो फिलहाल पायरेसी बहुत बड़ी प्रॉब्लम है . वैसे भी इस प्रकार कर फैन-आर्ट शायद नए readers को जोड़ने में मदद करे ! मैं नहीं कहता की इन कम्पनीज को मेरे फ्री की पब्लिसिटी की ज़रुरत है . नहीं , बिलकुल नहीं . यह तो सूरज को दीपक दिखाने जैसा होगा . यह कॉपीराइट और इस प्रकार के सवाल भी कहीं ना कही fans के दिमाग की ही उपज है . मुझे पूरी उम्मीद है की कॉमिक्स कंपनी इसे फैन-आर्ट के रूप में ही लेगी और इसका कोई issue नहीं बनाएगी . और अगर फिर भी उन्हें कोई भी समस्या हो तो तो वे हमे ईमेल कर सकते है और हम तुरंत अपना प्रकाशन रोक देंगे. मेरे ख्याल से fans को इस बात को यहीं भूल जाना चाहिए और अपना वक़्त इस बेकार के डिस्कशन के बजाये इस कॉमिक्स का मज़ा लेने में लगाना चाहिए .  

*) क्या आप पहले भी किसी ऑनलाइन कम्युनिटी से जुड़े थे यदि हाँ तो कौन कौन सी? 

मैं शायद ओरिजिनल इन्टरनेट कॉमिक्स फैन में से एक हूँ . मैं ब्लोग्स , ऑरकुट के विभिन्न फोरम , rcj , देसी-अमेरिकन और हर साईट से जुड़ा हूँ . इन शोर्ट अगर नेट पर कॉमिक्स है तो मैं वहां पर जुड़ा हुआ पाउँगा

*) - इस कॉमिक्स को बनाने का आईडिया कैसे आया व इस कहानी में क्या ख़ास बातें मिलेंगी पाठकों को?

एक कॉमिक्स फैन के लिये यह एक सपना पूरा होने की स्थिति होती है जब उनके सब मनपसंद हीरोज़ चाहे  अलग-अलग पब्लिकेशन या भाषा के एक साथ काम करें या एक-दूसरे से टकराये। मुझे उम्मीद है की आपको मेरा ये प्रयास अच्छा लगा होगा। मैं इस प्रोजेक्ट पर कई सालों से काम कर रहा हूँ। इतना समय इसलिए लगा क्योंकि ये काम अकेले इंसान के बूते के बाहर की बात है। साथ ही साथ मैं नहीं चाहता था की जल्द बाज़ी में आपको दोयम दर्ज़े की चीज़ पेश करूँ। इसमें विभिन्न स्तरों पर काफ़ी मित्रों ने सहायता की। मैं उन सभी का शुक्रगुज़ार हूँ। उनके बिना ये संभव नही था. ख़ास बात ये है की STORY IS FOR THE FANS, BY THE FANS. इसमें ओल्ड स्कूल स्टाइल की 90 के दशक के तरह की कहानी देखेंगे जहाँ हर कॉमिक्स की अपनी एक अलग स्टोरी है लेकिन ये सब स्टोरी एक मुख्य  उद्देश्य / कहानी की तरफ बढती है . शायद इसी कारणवश ये सिंपल है काम्प्लेक्स नहीं. इसका RC के सर्वनायक के साथ कोई भी तुलना बेमानी है .

*) - अपनी टीम के बारे में कुछ बतायें?

वैसे तो हम 4-5 लोग है . मेरे अलावा हमारे ग्राफ़िक कंसलटेंट है skhan भाई . और राइटर है stories के लेकिन अभी तक उनके alias रेडी नहीं है तो मैं आपको बता नही सकता लेकिन कॉमिक्स के साथ ही आप वो नाम ज़रूर देख पाएंगे

*) - कॉमिक आईडिया से लेकर आर्टवर्क एडिटिंग की प्रक्रिया से हमे अवगत करवायें।

फोटोशॉप सीखना , एक अच्छी कथा श्रृंखला लिखने की कोशिश करना , पूरी तैयारी करना इत्यादि बहुत मुश्किल रहा। ये कहना गलत होगा की सब कुछ मैंने अकेले किया है। सबसे अजीब बात ये रही की अंत में मैं photoshop सीखने में नाकाम रहा और फिर हमने आर्टवर्क MSPAINT और EXCEL की मदद से किया . आर्टवर्क के लिए raw images हमने स्कैन नहीं की है. यह सब हमने इन्टरनेट से ही लिया है . हमने पहले मुख्य स्टोरी पर काम किया, फिर हर कॉमिक्स की स्टोरी पर, फिर उनके स्क्रिप्ट्स और संवादों पर. अंत में हम पेज-by-पेज आर्टवर्क करते हैं

*) - प्रस्तुत कॉमिक और आगे की सीरीज के टीज़र्स के बारे में। 

अर्थ 24- पॉइंट जीरो . ये हमारी पहली कॉमिक्स है. पूरी कहानी की सूत्रधार . यहाँ हम देख रहे है फ़ोबोस और मोबोस (कोबी-भेड़िया वाले) के बीच लड़ाई को जो २४वे आयाम की पृथ्वी पर ज़लज़ला ला देगी . इस आयाम की खासियत ये है के हर आयाम की विशेषता और हीरोज़ इसमें है . इसमें कुछ चीज़े वो ही हो सकती है जो पाठकों को पता है लेकिन कुछ ट्विस्ट भी नए होंगे . जैसे पाठकों को ध्रुव ले पिता के बारे में पता है लेकिन यहाँ एक नया ट्विस्ट है, वैसे ही नागराज की कुछ शक्तियां है तो कुछ नहीं . सीरीज की सभी कॉमिक्स की प्लानिंग अभी नहीं हुई है लेकिन अभी २ कॉमिक्स कम्पलीट है और 5 की स्क्रिप्ट पर काम चल रहा है .

*) - आजकल के माहौल में अपने काम को कहाँ आंकते है ?

well ये तो अपने मुँह मिया मिठू वाली बात हुई. हमारा सही आंकलन तो आप और बाकि फैन ही कर सकते है . हमने हमारा काम प्रोफेशनल स्तर पर करने की कोशिश ज़रूर की है और ज़रूर दूसरे जितने भी फैन कॉमिक्स आये है उनसे आपको ये बेहतर और लयबद्ध लगेगा लेकिन हम अपनी तुलना RC या किसी कंपनी से नहीं करते. हम फैन है और उसी पहचान से खुश है

*) - देसी अमेरिकन वेबसाइट का विचार कब आया, इसके क्या उद्देश्य है और कैसा रिस्पांस मिल रहा है?

असल में साईट का विचार मेरा नहीं है . ये हमारे मित्र MR.NIK की है जिससे हम मिले और फिर इसी से जुड़ गए. यहाँ सबसे अच्छी बात ये है की इस साईट के कंटेंट ज़िन्दगी के हर पहलु से जुड़े है और यहाँ पर सबके लिए कुछ ना कुछ है . साईट का रेस्पोंसे अच्छा है .. हर रोज़ नए मेम्बर बन रहे है . मेरी सबसे येही रिक्वेस्ट है की आप साईट पर फ्री रजिस्ट्रेशन करे और लॉग इन कर कमेंट्स करे ताकि हम आपके विचार जान सके .nik के अनुसार इस साईट का मुख्य उद्देश था लोगों को जोड़े रखना. सभी जानते है की ऑरकुट की फोरम व्यवस्था अच्छी थी और अब उसके बंद होने के बाद सब फेसबुक से जुड़े हैं . लेकिन फेसबुक में पुरानी पोस्ट्स पढना मुश्किल होता है और कोई गारंटी नहीं के फेसबुक ये कब तक शुरू रखेगा. इसलिए यह साईट बने गयी जो हमेशा के लिए परमानेंट जगह हो दोस्तों के मिलने के लिए. तभी रजिस्ट्रेशन पर इतना जोर दिया जा रहा है . और यहाँ का रजिस्ट्रेशन कुछ दूसरी साईट के समान कठिन नहीं है . यह बिलकुल आसान है .

*) - पसंदीदा लेखको, कलाकारों के बारे में बतायें। 

मेरे ख्याल से अनुपम जी , मनु जी , स्कॉट snyder , बॉब kane, stan ली और प्राण सर ... 

*) - समकालीन कॉमिक्स पब्लिकेशन्स के काम से क्या आप संतुष्ट है? भारतीय कॉमिक्स से जुड़े अपने कुछ अनुभव, सुझाव आदि बताएं। 

मैं भारतीय इंग्लिश कॉमिक्स से बहुत संतुष्ट हूँ जैसे की होली काऊ, लेवल १० , याली ड्रीम , स्पीच बबल etc . इनका आर्टवर्क और पेपर क्वालिटी इस प्रकार होती है की उनकी ज्यादा कीमत भी भारी नहीं लगती. हालाँकि मेरा मानना है की वो कीमत थोड़ी कम कर सकते है . जहाँ तक हिंदी की बात है फेनिल जी से बहुत उम्मीद है और RC व डायमंड के अलावा कोई इंडस्ट्री के लीडर नहीं है. डायमंड की कॉमिक्स – चाचा चौधरी से ही मैं इस कॉमिक्स की दुनिया में आया.. फिर नागराज और ध्रुव का ऐसा साथ मिला के छुटा ही नहीं . एक मजेदार वाकया है , मै 4 साल का था और फैमिली के साथ ट्रेन में जा रहा था. घरवालों ने स्टेशन से चाचा चौधरी की कॉमिक्स ले कर दी लेकिन मुझे तब तक पढना नहीं आता था . मैं बार-बार बड़े भाई से पढने के लिए ज़िद कर रहा था . तभी एक अंकल जो सामने की सीट पर थे, मुझसे बोले “ इतने बड़े हो और पढना नहीं आता ?” शायद वो ही बात मेरे बाल सुलभ मन को लग गयी और मैंने खुद पढना शुरू किया.. और फिर पढने की ऐसी लत लगी की आज तक नहीं छुटी . मैं सिर्फ राज कॉमिक्स से अनुरोध करना चाहूँगा – गलतियाँ नहीं निकल रहा हूँ क्योंकि मैं अपने आप को उस लायक नही मानता – अनुरोध ये है की आप सेट निश्चित समय में निकले, और ज्यादा नहीं तो परमाणु, डोगा और भोकाल इन हीरोज़ पर भी ध्यान दे . आर्टवर्क आपका बहुत अच्छा हो गया है अब. साथ ही साथ पुरे देश में कैश-ओन-डेलिवरी शुरू करे और छोटे शहरों में जहाँ आपकी कॉमिक्स नहीं मिलती वहां कुछ प्रबंध करे . हो सके तो टायर-२ शहरों में भी कभी छोटे मोटे बुक फेर करे या वहां के उद्योग मेलों में भाग ले

*) - अब कॉमिक्स कल्चर किस तरह पहले से अलग है ? इन बदलावों को आप कैसे देखते है ?

कॉमिक्स कल्चर पहले से अच्छा हुआ है लेकिन डर भी लगता है की कहीं हमारी जनरेशन आखरी ना  हो कॉमिक्स फैन की !! यह हमारी ज़िम्मेदारी है की हम अगली पीढ़ी को कॉमिक्स से introduce करवाए . इन्टरनेट और ऑरकुट का बहुत बड़ा योगदान रहा है कॉमिक्स को DARK ages से बाहर लाने का . उम्मीद करता हूँ ये कारवां ऐसे ही बढ़ता जायेगा . अंत में, मैं सिर्फ इतना कहना चाहता हूँ की जूनून को ज़िन्दा रखें, आने वाली पीढियों में कॉमिक्स कल्चर को बढ़ावा दें और BUY COMICS & SAVE COMICS INDUSTRY !

हमारी कॉमिक्स - " अर्थ 24 - पॉइंट जीरो " काफी अच्छी प्रतिक्रिया मिली और आप सबके ईमेल भी प्राप्त हुए । सबसे अच्छी बात की हमारी कॉमिक्स को 250 से ज़्यादा डाउनलोड मिले है । प्रशंसा सभी को अच्छी लगती है लेकिन हमने कोशिश की है की आप की आलोचनाओं से भी सीखे । इन सभी बातों को ध्यान रख कर पिछली कॉमिक्स के सवालों का जवाब देने के लिए 
Illuminati Comics और desi-american.com पेश करते हैं " ग्राउंड जीरो - राइज ऑफ़ दी सरपेंट " जो ना सिर्फ कहानी को आगे बढ़ाएगी बल्कि सवालों का जवाब भी देगी । जी पाठकों की शिकायत थी की पहली कॉमिक्स बहुत छोटी थी उनके लिए भी खुशख़बरी है की ये अपने-आप में पूर्ण कॉमिक्स होगी जिसमें 40 पेज होंगे । महासंग्राम का पहला पड़ाव आरम्भ होगा 6 अप्रैल से" - Dr. Alucard (Illuminati Comics)

Indian artists vs Western icons (Deccan Herald)

Riveted to their globally marketed comic superheroes, thousands headed to the Bangalore Comic Con on Saturday.

On the sidelines of this hugely popular three-day art and illustration extravaganza, a bunch of Indian artists sat defiantly to beckon the youngsters to their brand of kitsch art. They were there to outwit their far superior comic book artists from the West, to carve a niche in a heavily contested market.

Spread out inside the 40,000 sq ft White Orchid Convention Centre at Bagmane Tech Park, the fest had big names from famed American and British comic books:The likes of Dan Parent, artist and writer best known for his work for Archies comics; David Lloyd, the British comics illustrator of the story ‘V for Vendattta’ and the American cartoonist Peter Kruper of the “Spy vs Spy” fame. Sporting masks and merchandise of their creations, seeking their autographs, their young fans ruled the centre.

Yet, the Indian avatars were in no mood to be outdone. Packing a punch, Amar Chitra Katha stood out with a massive pavilion. Its photobooths, quizzes, puppets and story-telling contests were designed to rev up the legendary comic books built on a liberal dose of pop mythology and culture. Raj Comics had book launches galore. Day 2 saw the unveiling of the Ravanayan Finale and The Kaurava Empire series.

Hovering artists

Outside this comic book straightjacket hovered artists such as Vikram Nandwani. He had given up his high-paying Infosys job to rebrand himself as a graphic designer, an artist hooked onto vector drawings and water colours to be reflected on flashy art merchandise. His “Verry India” brand had his art on T-shirts, bags, mousepads, laptops and iPad slings, clutches and wallets. 

Sameer Hazari was another engineer-turned-artist challenging the global crowd-pullers. Graduating from PES Institute of Technology here, he had realised early that his real call was art. So he packed off to London, finishing his Master of Fine Arts from Middlesex. The next six years, he reinvented himself, packaging his paintings on usable stuff. “I sensed it was the best thing.

My works resonates with the younger crowd. It gets easier to connect with them when the art works are put on mugs and T-shirts and more,” he explained to Deccan Herald.

Art merchandising was precisely what drove Mumbai-based Jenny Bhatt to print her works on coasters and iPhone covers. Under her banner, “Moksha Shots,” Bhatt had her exclusive range of art toys and abstract ethnic icons to beckon the crowds. 

“I know it will take time for Indian artists to make a mark. Indians automatically gravitate to anything foreign. But the younger crowds are showing interest, they are open to check what we do too,” said she.

Cartoonist Rohan Chakravarty finds wildlife incredibly funny. His affliction is contagious and his first solo exhibition is sure to infect you with the same incurable case of chuckles.

If you haven’t heard of Rohan Chakravarty you’ve been missing out on an entire parallel universe of laughs. Add to that chuckles, sniggers, guffaws and other varieties of ROFL. If you are a wildlife enthusiast or a birder, your error of omission is unpardonable. Read between those laugh lines, and you’ll see that Rohan is a wildlife crusader in mufti. While his gags are spot on, his witty, sardonic swipes at real, pressing environmental issues are unerring and razor-keen.

Rohan, who calls Nagpur home but has been based out of Bangalore for a while, trained to be a dentist. However, destiny and a beautiful tigress conspired (or perhaps inspired?) to get him to sink his fangs in this rather unrewarding pursuit. Most of us with bad teeth have more than a rough idea of how much dentists take home on average, and naturally Rohan’s career choice raised as many hackles as eyebrows. Making a living as a cartoonist, by Rohan’s own admission, isn’t for the “weak-arted”.

So here’s redemption. Rohan’s first solo exhibition – Wildlife the Toonie Way – will grace the august halls of the Indian Cartoon Gallery on Bangalore’s MG Road from September 13 to 27, 2014. After you read this interview, you’ll drop everything and go.

In a freewheeling email conversation (whatever the heck that means) with Travel Editor Bijoy Venugopal, Rohan Chakravarty chats about work and play though usually both mean the same thing to him.

What’s Wildlife the Toonie Way all about?

Wildlife the Toonie Way is a series of wildlife caricatures I am illustrating in a bid to create a bank of fun, delightful and quirky illustrations that capture wildlife in its full glory, intended for publication and use in wildlife/ conservation related multimedia. Having created more than 70 such pieces, I am conducting my first solo exhibition in Bangalore, from September 13 to 27, where I will be displaying and selling prints of these caricatures. 

What’s so inspiring about wildlife? Do you find them cooler than politicians or celebs?

I love drawing things that are beautiful. That rules out politicians. I also love drawing things that aren’t fake. That rules out celebs. I have tried my hands at various subjects as a cartoonist, but only wildlife gave me a true sense of contentment. I think I just relate better with animals rather than people. (It’d be so much wiser to just piss on your property to say it’s yours, rather than build a fence around it!)

You poke merciless fun at your characters but always leave an underlying message in there for humans. What are you getting at with your cartoons?

Frankly, the core purpose of drawing cartoons for me is just to make some mischief every day and have fun. The conservation messages and the trivia thus portrayed are the by-products.

You’re a conservationist and activist at heart. And there’s nothing funny about the fate of wildlife the world over. Is there a serious side to Rohan the cartoonist?

My friends often call me a grumpy ol’ man, so I guess the humorous side to me is the actual surprise! Reading about all the pain, injustice and exploitation that wildlife faces every day, does make you clench your teeth and fists in anger. Fortunately for me, my clenched fists always find a pen in them and they’re learning what to do with it.

The first story that comes to my mind is my attempt to sight the Greater Adjutant Stork, an endangered bird that is found only in a massive garbage dump in the outskirts of Guwahati. I had just landed in Guwahati and was supposed to travel to Arunachal Pradesh the following morning to attend the Arunachal Bird Festival. Since it wasn’t dusk yet, I knew I had a chance of seeing the bird. I had done a rough sketch of the Adjutant in the plane, and using it like a police sketch, me and a visibly dumbfounded cab driver (because no one before had ever asked him to be driven from the airport straight to the city’s largest dump), embarked on the stork’s trail, and we were shortly rewarded with a sighting of around 150 of these very rare, very ugly birds!

Who or what inspired you to become a cartoonist? What’s the story behind Green Humour? And does your family think you’re nuts?

I think I learnt to appreciate the nitty-gritties of the cartooning business from a very early age watching the work of Hanna Barbera and Genndy Tartakovsky. Even though they were motion animators, their shows had gags crafted very cleverly (and I really pity the kind of shows kids today grow up watching). Tartakovsky particularly has been a prime source of inspiration, right from the very first episode of Dexter’s Laboratory I watched. I was so smitten by his work, that as a school kid, I often adapted his characters into my storylines and created little comic books out of them. I drew these comics everywhere – in my notebooks, on the corners of textbooks, on my desk, on the wall. Some of my teachers, who borrowed my notebooks full of comics, still have them!

By the time I was into my teens, the thought of pursuing cartooning as a career had somehow been vanquished by peer and parental pressure of being a part of the ‘SEE/PMT’ rat race. Somehow I made my way into a dental college and finished my degree sailing through it aimlessly and lifelessly. It was during my dentistry days that I met a beautiful tigress on my first serious ‘safari’ and I then tried my hand at portraying conservation messages through cartoons. Over time, some of these had started getting noticed and published, and while I knew that making a living out of it would be out of bounds, it was certainly something I would want to have a shot at. I trained myself with animation design, took up a job in Bangalore as a pre-production artist and illustrator, funding myself while I conceived and drew my wildlife cartoons, ‘Green Humour’, by the side. In June 2014 I quit the job to devote all my time to Green Humour, and see where it goes.

There’s no doubt that my family thinks I am nuts. But still somehow, I have their unconditional support. I think somewhere deep down, they’ve got to be nuts too!

The Narrative of Comics *Event Update*

KOCHI: ‘Image - Text - Sound’ is a day-long comics workshop by comics creator and researcher Gokul Gopalakrishnan. It will be held on September 20, at the David Hall, Fort Kochi. 

Gokul is a comics creator and researcher based in Thrissur. His comic strip ‘Small Talk’ appears in ‘The New Indian Express’ Sunday paper. A regular comics contributor to other newspapers, his writings on comics have appeared in academic and popular journals.
Along with providing an overview of the history of the development of comics narrative, the workshop shows how comics uses disparate elements like image, text, sound, space and time to weave engaging narratives. This is perfect for comic aficionados, interested readers and aspiring creators, as it deals with the poetics of comics creation, with examples from works of comics creators across the globe.

At 6 p.m., on the same day, there is a book reading by cartoonist EP Unny from his book, ‘Santa and the Scribes: The Making of Fort Kochi’.

Suhas Sundra Interview (DNA)

There are several graphic artists in India that work off of their foreign counterparts, and present comic books that represent the traditions, culture and mythology of India. Suhas Sundra, an engineering graduate from the Indian School of Business has worked on various comics and animation projects, including 'Batu Gaiden', 'The Rabhas Incident' and most notably, 'Odayan'.

dna decided to get in touch with him and speak to him about 'Odayan', the comic book industry in India, the trials and tribulations he faced, as well as what makes a graphic novel work in today's world. 

Why did you create the graphic novel series? What inspired you to do so?
We created 'Odayan' to be a part of the lineup of titles that were being published by Level 10 Comics. Inspiration for the series is the setting of feudal Kerala as well as martial art epics.

In the Indian market, do you feel that graphic novels are starting to gain more and more popularity?
Certainly, though not on the scale it deserves. It is however heartening to see the number of books being churned out for mature audiences. One only needs to go to any online portal and see the reviews from fans for the books currently being produced and it makes me believe that there will be a lot more content coming our way soon.

Which foreign and Indian novelists are you influenced by?
Too many foreign authors to list, but some of my favorites include Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison, Jean Van Hamme, Kazuo Koike, etc…from India I recommend, Saurav Mohapatra, Samit Basu, Sumit Kumar, Anant Singh.
 
How far do you see the series going?
Our current plan is to wrap it up in five books, but we will take a call based on how the story shapes up as well as fan response.
 
What has been the reception to the series so far?
The reception has been very positive and overwhelming, with fan art and reviews popping up all over the place.

If you could write a graphic novel on any super hero, which would it be?
Batman… hands down.

How would you make it more relatable to an Indian audience?
Batman as a concept is universal so I wouldn’t try to Indian-ise it in anyway. I would probably try to focus on an aspect of Bruce Wayne’s early training years by bringing him to India.

Suhas Sundar is an Engineering Graduate and an MBA from the Indian School of Business. He used to work out of Bangalore and Chicago in Information Technology before coming back to India to start Level 10 Entertainment, an angel funded company based out of Bangalore and Mumbai. As the Creative Director at this start up he was responsible for conceiving and executing IPs across comics and animation including 'Batu Gaiden', 'The Rabhas Incident' and 'Odayan'. Post Level 10’s merger with Japanese firm Zero Sum to form Nihodo Media, Suhas has taken over as the CEO of Nihodo Media and his second animated feature with frequent collaborator Deepak is slated for release on Cartoon Network in 2014.

Inspirations from Reality

Duniya mey kai aise ajubey log, ghatnaayein, etc, hui hai jinhone apni khaasiyaton se logo ko apni aur aakarshit kiya hai aur aisa aage bhi hota rahega. Halaki, comics fiction hoti hai par unme bhi duniya ki kai baatein aur shakhshiyatein jhalakti hai. Jaise haal hi mai 'So jaa Doga' aur 'Wafa' series mey Nithari kaand aur ek celebrity wedding ki ghatnaaon ki jhalak nazar aayi. RC asal zindagi ki aisi ghatnaaon aur kirdaaro se prerit comics laati rahi hai. Jaise parallel governments ka mudda utthati 'Aadhe Insaan' ya Poorva V.V.I.P.s ki suraksha ko kendra mey rakh kar likhi gayi 'Turupchal'.
Kya aap log asal zindagi kay kuch logo se milte julte patro ko aur apni chhap chhod chuki ghatnaaon se prerit comics ko padhna chahte hai ? Agar haan to unn ghatnaaon aur logo kay baare mey likhiye. Wo log aur ghatnaayein kisi bhi time period ki ho sakti hai. 
Jaise mujhe lagta hai ki Bhopal gas kaand par ek umda T.H.S. Comics ban sakti hai. Saath hi hi mai Mira Baai, Swami Vivekanand, par aadharit side characters ko padhna pasand karunga.

Waise to comics kaalpanik hoti hai par unhe readers se joddne kay liye unme facts aur reality ko daala jaata hai. Ye practice Raj Comics kay liye bhi nayi nahi hai. Bahut pehle se hi RC apni kai comics mey fantasy aur reality ka shaandaar sangam deti aayi hai. 
Reality aur facts ka mukhya kaam writer ki imagination ko kadam kadam par support karna hota hai isliye reality ki zaroorat har kahani mey hoti hai par reality aur facts ka level kahani kay hisaab se badalta rehta hai. Kai comics mey asal ghatnao se inspired ya unhe covert karke kahaniyon ka roop diya jaata hai. Exceptions kay roop mey kabhi kabhi ghatnao waise ka waisa rakh diya jaata hai. 
Aajkal Nagar World Series (NWS), mey Nagraj jis bhi desh mey jaata hai wahan se juddi bahut si jaankariyan aur jagaho kay baare mey bataya jaata hai. Doga ki comics uski shuruat se hi kai baar samajik vishayo aur kaalpanik duniya ka adbhut sangam karti aayi hai. Baaki kirdaaro ki aisi comics beech beech mey aati rehti hai. Gamraj aur Fighter Toads kay zariye bhi samajik samasyaon par hasya vyang kiye jaate rahe hai. 

To kya aap iss reality level ko fantasy kay saath zyada dekhna pasand karte hai ya kum ?

Kisi famous work ko imitate karke humorous tareke se dobara banana Parody kehlata hai. 1996 -1997 mey Raj Comics kuch Parodies publish kar chuki hai. Ye parodies kuch Hindi Blockbuster movies par based thi. # - 'Bill waale Dhamkiyan De Jaayenge' (Dil waale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge),

Ye comic strips Nagraj fan club (aur RC fans) ki magazine kay roop mey launch ki gayi thi aur inke Third issue se inka naam 'Fang' rakha gaya. Fang kay first issue mey 'Bhaagi Ghar' kay saath Cherry, Sady, Friendy, ki comic strips chhapi thi. Movie ki story kay saath saath uske songs ki bhi parody ki gayi thi. Kyoki ye RC kay parody mey apni tarah kay pehle efforts thay isliye ye stories aur artworks theek thak thay. Kisi nay RC ki ye parodies padhi hai?

Kya RC ko aage bhi achchhe concepts aur artworks kay saath Parodies publish karni chahiye?

Waise kuch comics kay scenes mey mashoor incidents, films, etc, ki parody ki jaati hai. Celebrities jaise naam aur style waale chhote characters bhi kabhi - kabhi Fighter Toads aur Gamraj ki comics mey khoob comedy karte hai. Ek Bankey Lal ki comic to Ramayan ki parody thi. Mujhe uska naam yaad nahi. To kya aap RC dwara banayi gayi parodies ko aage padhna chahte hai?

Parodies karne kay liye unka subject selection (jis par wo based ho) bahut zaroori hai kyoki galat subject ki comedy se bahut se readers hurt ho sakte hai. For example kai ideologies, cultures, ki drawbacks ko basis bana kar badhiya parodies to ban sakti hai lekin unke content mey kab kisi ka anjaane mey mazaak ban jaaye ya limit cross ho jaaye pata nahi chalta. Shayad isliye hi parodies kum aati hai. 

Parodies ko safal banane kay liye 2 baatein bahut important hai. Pehli to yeh ki wo kisi fictional work par based ho, saath hi satire aur parody ko indirect way mey likhne se unka zyada asar bhi hota hai aur writer ko freedom bhi milti hai.
